OPINION: Carbon credits for sale - Canada’s market plan for climate change

It’s late but it’s a lot: more than $1 billion in carbon credits will soon change hands each year in a domestic market.

In the August days of an extreme summer the Federal government quietly released its much-awaited framework and proposed rules for the Canadian Offset System. Under Offsets, eligible projects that produce greenhouse gas emissions reductions will be issued carbon credits – one credit for each tonne of greenhouse gases reduced or removed from the atmosphere. Credits can be sold to buyers directly, through brokers or in a yet-to-be-created domestic exchange. Prices will be set by the market.
